Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenski announced on X that Ukraine’s accession to the European Union should be finalized by 2027, calling the membership a key security guarantee for both Ukraine and the broader European continent. He made the statement after a phone call with Austrian Chancellor Christian Stocker in which he informed the chancellor about trilateral talks in the United Arab Emirates that covered military issues and security guarantees. Ukraine applied for EU membership in February 2022 following Russia’s invasion, and the European Commission approved the request in June 2022, granting candidate status that same month. Negotiations began in December 2023 but are currently stalled by Hungary’s opposition in the Council. Zelenski stressed that Ukraine’s security, technology and economic contributions would help make collective European defence possible.
