Turkish businessman Atas Abdullah, convicted of killing a Romanian policeman in 2015, escaped from Rahova penitentiary after being granted a release permit on 26 January 2026. The escape followed 24 prior release permits and 72 rewards for his behaviour, according to Justice Minister Radu Marinescu. Police searched his home in Voluntari but found no trace. Authorities are investigating the prison’s procedures. The incident follows his 22‑year sentence for the murder of Officer Gheorghe Ionescu.
