Zurich tops the 2026 Numbeo cost‑of‑living ranking, priced 18.5 % above New York. Switzerland’s six cities - Zurich, Geneva, Basel, Lausanne, Lugano and Bern - occupy the entire top‑six slot. In the top‑20 list also appear Tel Aviv, London, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Honolulu, San Francisco, Seattle, Oslo, Singapore, Washington D.C., San Jose, Boston and Charleston. Among 479 cities analysed, only nine are Romanian. Bucharest ranks 296th with a cost index of 46.3, followed by Cluj‑Napoca (309), Brașov (315), Constanța (319), Timișoara (330), Iași (336), Craiova (343), Sibiu (350) and Oradea (351). The data show that Romanian cities sit in the lower tier of global cost rankings, with indices between 38 and 45, and are considered some of the most affordable in Europe. Swiss cities lead in food and restaurant prices, while Romanian cities differ internally, with Bucharest and Cluj‑Napoca having the highest rents and eastern/southern towns such as Craiova and Iași being cheaper.
