Salman Rushdie warned on Sunday at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah that "the idea of danger and violence is now almost everywhere in this country," citing his own survival of a knife attack in August 2022 and the killing of two Americans by federal agents in Minneapolis. The British‑American author, who received a 2023 peace award, said that the violence he endured is part of a larger trend that threatens culture. He criticised President Donald Trump for attacking universities and traditional media, calling them "liars." Rushdie also noted that his documentary film "Knife" is not a commentary on current events, but the timing makes it feel timely, as people sense the risk of violence today. The festival will close on February 1.
