Romania's desertification strategy, drafted in 2019, remains unapproved after seven years of governmental inaction. The plan, which once guided a 20‑year effort, is now a draft that has not been implemented. As a result, the country faces a loss of 7 million hectares of land to desertification, threatening 40 percent of its agricultural area. The most vulnerable regions are the south, Dobrogea and southern Moldavia. Officials blame budget constraints and political indifference for the failure to act, while environmental experts warn that the situation could worsen before the strategy’s 2030 deadline. The neglect of the plan places millions of people at risk and undermines Romania’s agricultural productivity and ecosystem health.
