Romanian public opinion is split nearly evenly on how war strategy should be handled. According to a recent INSCOP survey, 43.2 % of respondents prefer that EU member states keep all security and defence powers for protecting citizens in case of military aggression. Conversely, 41.7 % favour the EU taking on more security and defence responsibilities from member states. The larger share of voters in favour of a stronger EU role comes from PNL and USR supporters, and the majority of voters under 30 chose this option. The survey shows a broader confusion among the Romanian elite about the proper place of the EU in national defence. A 15.1 % share of respondents either did not know or chose not to answer. Remus Ștefureac, director of INSCOP Research, explained that the survey measures the strategic confusion of elites rather than a mature, autonomous opinion. The findings suggest that public debate in Romania remains fragmented and that there is no clear consensus on the EU’s place in national security.
