Romanian police say Abdullah Atas, a Turkish businessman jailed for killing a policeman, has escaped from Rahova Prison and may be in Turkey. Bogdan Despescu, Secretary of State for the Ministry of Internal Affairs, told reporters that the 46‑year‑old escaped during a leave between 23 and 26 January. He was released on parole, signed documents, then failed to return. The National Administration of Prisons (ANP) notified authorities and the Ministry of Justice sent a control team to investigate. Despescu cited information from the suspect’s former partner, who claimed a contact told her Atas was in Turkey. Prison officials say Atas was serving a 22‑year sentence for aggravated murder. An image from the capital shows the suspect in a restaurant in Sector 2 of Bucharest on Saturday evening. Romanian police are pursuing him and suspect he crossed into Turkey.
