Romanian Minister of Economy Irinel Darău held an interview with the newspaper Adevărul on Wednesday. He outlined how Romania will implement the European SAFE mechanism to produce defense equipment in partnership with foreign partners and discussed a potential revitalisation of the Romanian shipbuilding industry after interest was expressed by investors such as Rheinmetall. Darău also spoke about the impact of the Mercosur agreement on the domestic automotive industry, the recent appointments of state‑owned company executives, and the effect of higher taxes and duties set to take effect in 2026. He indicated that the government may consider dropping some of these levies next year. In the interview he briefly touched on political matters, including the possibility of a change in the governing coalition that could lead to a re‑allocation of ministries. The minister, originally from Victoria, Romania, has a background in software and has worked in France, where he opened a consulting firm in Nisa. He also mentioned his involvement in the 2025 presidential campaign and donations received for local elections in Brașov.
