ROMANIA - Former vice‑president of the Romanian Bar Association, Claudiu Sandu, has warned that the country is edging toward a “paradise for criminals”. He cites the release of Turkish businessman Atas Abdullah, who escaped from prison and is now in Turkey, the fatal road‑traffic incident that killed policeman Gheorghe Ionescu, and a recent murder in Cenei, Timiș, where a 15‑year‑old was killed by other minors. Sandu calls for stricter application of the law and for judges to act with responsibility and severity. His remarks come amid rising public concern over judicial reforms and legislative changes that many say favour offenders rather than victims.
