Title: Romanian Diaspora Study Reveals Political Discontent and Populist Tendencies A recent qualitative study by sociologist Barbu Mateescu and the Institute for Social Research (IRES), commissioned by the Konrad Adenauer Foundation, surveyed Romanian expatriates in Austria, France, Italy, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Spain about their views on Romania, their voting preferences in the 2025 presidential election, and their expectations of political leadership. The findings show a strong sense of alienation from the Romanian political class, a perception that politicians are privileged and inaccessible, and a readiness to support populist leaders such as George Simion and Călin Georgescu. Those who voted for Nicușor Dan reported greater integration into host societies and more realistic expectations. The study highlights a widening gap between diaspora concerns-healthcare, education, economic opportunities, corruption-and the response of Romania’s current governing coalition. It raises questions about representation and national identity in a divided society.
