Romanian customs chief Alexandru Bogdan Bălan was dismissed by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan on 27 January 2026 and replaced by former vice‑president Mihai Savin. The decision, published in the Official Gazette, follows a nine‑year criminal investigation by the National Anti‑Corruption Directorate into Bălan’s alleged abuse of office and intellectual fraud linked to former Romprest boss Florian Walter. The Directorate closed the case in May 2025, ruling that the elements of abuse of office were not present. Bălan had reportedly informed the media of the closure before the dismissal was announced.
