Romanian authorities have fined more than 28,000 lei and opened a criminal file after the Union Day protests on January 24 in Iași. Police arrested a Bucharest participant for provocative behaviour and fined him 1,000 lei, and another was sent to the prosecutor’s office for possession of a dangerous object. 14 further contraventional penalties, worth 27,000 lei, were imposed for unlawful assemblies, incitement to violence and insulting public order. The gendarmerie says investigations are still ongoing to identify other offenders who pressured the security forces, incited violence or disrespected national symbols.
