Romania’s apple growers receive modest EU aid after spring frosts. The Ministry of Agriculture announced a maximum 2,000 € per hectare payment for orchards hit by late‑spring frosts in March and April. Only about 8,800 ha of fruit trees qualify, and the money is due by 30 April 2026. Grower Daniel Pavel of Brăneşti, Dolj, says the support covers only a fraction of losses and arrives too late for timely treatment. He describes how his orchard suffered from two frosts, followed by summer heat that damaged the remaining trees. The farmer has tried various protective measures - straw, steam heaters, heat‑tubes, and planting late‑flowering varieties - but still faces significant losses. He calls for faster and larger aid and for research institutions to provide solutions to the recurring “late‑spring frost” problem that affects fruit production nationwide.
