Romania updates the SUMAL electronic transport system to prevent illegal timber shipments. Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu announced on Tuesday that the app now requires freight companies to not only issue but also upload a transport voucher before loading the cargo. The change follows a discovered scheme in which firms would upload a voucher, immediately disable their internet to stop the upload, and then re‑enable it only if stopped by traffic police, allowing up to 7 000 suspicious shipments. The minister thanked the stakeholders who helped implement the update quickly. The update aims to ensure each shipment is recorded in real time, reducing opportunities for timber theft and improving compliance with the law.
