Romania has been allocated €16.6 billion from the European Union’s SAFE program, the second‑largest allocation in the EU. The government announced the projects on 26 January 2026, with spending to finish by 2030. €4.2 billion will fund the Moldavia motorway, €9.6 billion will go to the Ministry of Defence (MApN) and €2.8 billion will support the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) and other national security bodies. Defence spending includes 21 projects, 10 of which are joint purchases with other states. Examples include a €652 million joint contract with France for Mistral missiles, 12 French‑made H225 helicopters, 12 radar systems, and three air‑defence systems to complement the Patriot network, jointly purchased with Germany. MAI plans to buy drones, helicopters, robots, aircraft and patient transport trains, including a 900 million‑euro civil defence package comprising ambulances, a patient‑transport train, multi‑role aircraft, seven medium‑weight helicopters, five light‑medium helicopters, a flight simulator and two river search‑and‑rescue boats. The projects aim to enhance civil resilience and state security.
