ROMANIA - The Ministry of Defence announced on Monday that Romania has secured a historic 16.68 billion euro financing through the European SAFE mechanism. The package, approved by the European Commission, will fund 21 strategic military procurement projects worth 9.3 billion euros, along with dual‑infrastructure upgrades. Terms include a grace period until 2035 and a 45‑year repayment horizon. Minister Radu Miruta said the deal will modernise the army and strengthen national security, while other officials noted the funding supports broader defence and civil‑security projects. The allocation is part of the EU’s broader effort to support member states’ defence capabilities.
