Romania has received more than 60 billion euros in remittances from its diaspora over the last twelve years, according to the National Bank of Romania. 6.7 billion euros arrived in 2024 alone, roughly 2 percent of the country’s GDP. These transfers translate into over 34 billion euros of local currency, helping to stabilize the leu, increase household purchasing power and support pension payments. The money is sent mainly by the roughly five million Romanians living abroad, many of whom hope to return but continue to support relatives at home. The flow of remittances has been described as a key engine of economic growth, comparable to the investment volume from Germany, France, Italy and the United States combined. Analysts say the funds could pay all pensions for three months or buy 450,000 Dacia Logan cars.
