Polish-made electric train sets have arrived in Romania and are now being tested on the national rail network. The Romanian Rail Reform Authority signed a €561 million contract-funded largely by European Union contributions-to purchase 62 electric trainsets from PESA of Poland. Eight units have already reached Romanian borders; four have been accepted and are in active trials, notably in Bacău on the 500 route. The trains, capable of 160 km/h, feature modern safety, surveillance and regenerative braking systems, though current infrastructure limits speeds to a few sections. Delivery is scheduled to continue until 2027, with roughly four new sets arriving each month from March. Planned service corridors include Bucharest‑North to Brașov, Adjud, Pitești and Călărași, as well as routes linking Brașov‑Gheorgheni, Iași‑Suceava, Cluj‑Napoca‑Craiova and Constanța‑Suceava.
