New Gentleman Jack ballet rehearsed at Northern Ballet Choreographer Annabelle Lopez Ochoa is creating a ballet version of the TV series Gentleman Jack for Northern Ballet in Leeds. Lopez Ochoa, a Belgian‑Colombian who lives in Amsterdam, was inspired to accept the project after binge‑watching the series. She says the 19th‑century landowner Anne Lister’s audacity and cleverness resonate with her own experience in a male‑dominated choreography world. The production will feature dancers Gemma Coutts, Amber Lewis and Nida Aydinoğlu in the lead roles and will portray Lister’s relationships with Mariana Lawton and Ann Walker. Lopez Ochoa will have the dancer playing Lister wear flat shoes instead of pointe to reflect Lister’s gender‑neutral style and to ground the partnering. The ballet aims to avoid cliché, bring a raunchy, sinuous energy to the stage and explore romantic female pas de deux. The TV series has a passionate fan base, and the choreographer hopes the ballet will resonate similarly with audiences.
