NATO plans to create an AI‑driven automated defence zone along its eastern borders with Russia, deploying sensors, armed drones, semi‑autonomous vehicles, ground robots, and air‑defence systems to form a “hot zone” that will detect and engage hostile forces automatically. General Thomas Lowin, deputy commander of NATO’s Land Command in Izmir, Turkey, said the system will operate in a cloud‑based network with real‑time data sharing across NATO members, while maintaining human decision‑making on the use of force. Romanian Defence Minister Radu Miruta was asked about the report during a press conference, to which he replied that the plan will still involve substantial troop presence to counter Russia’s large force in the region. The initiative aims to deter Russian advances and strengthen NATO’s eastern flank over the next two years.
