Romanian Justice Minister Radu Marinescu announced on 28 January 2026 in Parliament that 6,000 electronic bracelets to monitor inmates will cost about 100 million lei. The bracelets will be used for prisoners on parole and for those working outside prison. Marinescu said the Ministry aims to purchase them this year, citing a shortage of 5,000 guard personnel and budget constraints. The announcement followed the escape of Turkish businessman Atas Abdullah from Rahova Penitentiary after a parole. Abdullah had previously been granted 24 paroles and was praised for his good conduct. Marinescu said no incidents had occurred in prior paroles.
