IICCMER has demanded that Defence Minister Radu Miruta issue a public apology after he suggested that Nicolae Ceaușescu could be seen as a patriot. In a recent interview on Digi 24, Miruta offered vague remarks about Ceaușescu’s legacy, which the institute described as “alarmant and dangerous” amid a climate of widespread communist nostalgia in Romania. IICCMER’s statement condemned the minister’s comments as a denial of historical truth that could legitimize the suffering caused by the Ceaușescu regime. Miruta later clarified on his Facebook page that he had merely explained why some still view Ceaușescu as a hero and why such arguments are invalid, but he did not retract his earlier statements. The institute insists that the minister must apologise to victims of the communist dictatorship and to all citizens who value democracy and truth.
