Hobbycraft has announced a full recall of its Giant Box of Craft coloured play sand after tests confirmed that some vials contained fibrous tremolite asbestos. The retailer, which had already withdrawn the set from sale, had not warned buyers until a parent in the UK, who recognised the risk from reports in Australia and New Zealand, had her children test the sand. Three of five bottles in the box tested positive. The company now instructs purchasers to stop using the sand, store it securely, and return it to a Hobbycraft store for a full refund or dispose of it safely. The recall follows independent testing and is carried out in cooperation with Trading Standards and the Office for Product Safety and Standards. Asbestos poses a long‑term cancer risk even at low exposure, and the affected product was manufactured in China. Hobbycraft says the recall is a precautionary measure to protect children and comply with the General Product Safety Regulations.
