Greenland’s ancient geology has built a vast reserve of natural resources, from oil and gas to rare‑earth elements, gold and diamonds. Dr Jonathan Paul of Royal Holloway, University of London explains that mountain building, rifting that created the Atlantic, and volcanic activity over the last four billion years produced fault systems, sedimentary basins and mineral‑rich deposits. Though 80 % of the island is ice‑covered, warming temperatures may open access to these assets, raising questions about exploitation and environmental cost.
