A 63‑year‑old French retiree who bought and renovated a former rural train station in Parcieux, Auvergne‑Rhône‑Alpes, has learned that a new bus line will run through her garden. Laurence Maritano spent €322,000 on the property and an additional €50,000 on renovations, only to find that a parcel owned by SNCF now belongs to the region and is 5 m deep, not the 1½ m she thought. The regional council also plans to expropriate part of her garden for the Trévoux‑Lyon bus line, threatening her pool and vegetable plot. Maritano says she cannot sell the home, her pension is low, and she is forced to work again. She is demanding that the regional council buy the entire property or negotiate a compromise to preserve part of the garden and pool so she can sell. The situation has caused her significant distress and financial hardship.
