Former French senator Joël Guerriau was sentenced by a Paris court to four years in prison, including one and a half years of immediate incarceration, for drugging his former parliamentary colleague Sandrine Josso with ecstasy in order to facilitate a sexual assault. The tribunal accepted the defendant’s intent as a sexual motive, also imposing a five‑year period of ineligibility to hold public office and a compulsory treatment regimen. Guerriau, who resigned from the Senate in October 2025, is preparing to appeal. The case, which follows the 2024 conviction of Dominique Pelicot for drug‑facilitated sexual assault of his wife, has heightened scrutiny of sexual misconduct within French political circles. President Emmanuel Macron’s governing coalition, which includes Guerriau’s Horizons party, has publicly condemned the allegations.
