Flu season 2025/26 in Romania driven by A(H3N2) subclade K began early and has caused many cases, especially among vulnerable groups. Health experts say the severity is no greater than previous years. The subclade appeared about four weeks earlier than past seasons, raising early activity in Europe and parts of the United States. 90% of confirmed cases in Europe are now from subclade K, but the World Health Organization reports it does not cause more severe disease. Vaccines remain moderately effective-52‑57% protection against severe illness in Europe and 30‑40% in U.S. adults, with higher effectiveness in children. Subclade K is fully responsive to standard antiviral drugs such as oseltamivir and baloxavir. Dr. Mihai Craiu advises people to avoid crowded, poorly ventilated indoor spaces, wash hands, rest, stay hydrated and eat well. He stresses that vaccination in January is still timely for those with chronic conditions. The Romanian health ministry has released a special senior‑targeted vaccine to improve protection for those over 60. No major changes in policy are expected, but authorities urge continued vigilance for at least two more months.
