Finland Coast Guard plans a new maritime surveillance centre in the Gulf of Finland to prevent damage to submarine cables. The centre will use seabed sensors and artificial‑intelligence analysis to monitor traffic in real time and share information with partners in the Baltic Sea and the European Commission. Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, the region has seen repeated cable strikes. Finland has already seized several vessels suspected of sabotaging cables, including a Russian‑bound cargo ship, a Chinese container ship, and two Finnish ships in 2024 and 2025. The project is part of an EU‑backed action plan announced in February 2025 and will seek EU funding. Finnish Coast Guard chief Mikko Hirvi said the centre would be built gradually on existing Coast Guard capabilities, while district commander Mikko Simola highlighted the importance of monitoring unusual vessel behaviour.
