EU final approval of Russian gas ban until 2027 EU member states voted on Monday to approve a plan to ban Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, turning the decision into law. The ban covers liquefied natural gas from Russia until 31 December 2026 and pipeline gas until 30 September 2027, with a possible extension to 1 November 2027 if a country struggles to fill its winter reserves. Hungary and Slovakia voted against the measure and Hungary announced it will take the case to the European Court of Justice. The ban is part of the bloc’s effort to cut dependency on Russia after the 2022 invasion of Ukraine, when Russia supplied more than 40 % of EU gas; that share fell to about 13 % in 2025. The decision was reached by a consolidated majority, allowing the EU to override the opposition from Hungary and Slovakia, which remain largely dependent on Russian energy and want to keep close ties with Moscow. The European Commission will implement the law and monitor compliance.
