Cuba conducted a series of military drills on Saturday with top army officials, as part of a new National Defence Day. President Miguel Diaz‑Canel participated in tank unit exercises, shooting drills and visited an air‑defence unit, saying the exercises were significant amid what he calls the hegemonic offensive of the United States. The drills come after the U.S. operation that removed Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from power on 3 January and are the third week of defence activities following that event. Havana has intensified verbal confrontation with Washington, with Diaz‑Canel stating that there is no surrender or capitulation possible in the face of a potential U.S. attack.
