Toronto, 27 Jan 2026 - Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he would withdraw the aggressive remarks he made at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He met with U.S. President Donald Trump in the Oval Office earlier that day, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Fox News. Trump had already revoked Carney’s invitation to a Peace Council and warned of 100 % tariffs on Canadian goods if Ottawa signed a trade deal with China. Carney’s speech called for the end of the rule‑based global order and urged middle powers to act together. The remarks were met with cheers from other leaders at Davos, but Trump criticized Carney and threatened sanctions. Carney has not yet commented on Bessent’s statement. Ottawa fears a trade dispute with the U.S. would be disastrous.
