Tirana, Albania - Thousands of opposition supporters gathered on 24 January to protest against Prime Minister Edi Rama’s government. The demonstration, organised by the Democratic Party, was initially peaceful but devolved into clashes when protesters hurled Molotov cocktails, stones and fireworks at security forces. Police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets, injuring at least 11 officers and several demonstrators. The Ministry of Interior reports the wounded police suffered burns and cuts; medical assistance is underway. The protestors accused the Rama administration of corruption, abuse of power and poor economic management, demanding his immediate resignation. Traffic was restricted and a large security contingent was deployed around the Prime Minister’s office and Parliament.
