Ajax Amsterdam's first Jewish player, Edward "Eddy" Hamel, born in New York in 1902 to Dutch parents, joined the club in the 1920s and became a fan favourite known as "Young Ram." In 1942 he was arrested for leaving the club, and his family was deported by the Nazis. He was sent to Auschwitz where he died. A plaque at 145 Rijstraat in Amsterdam commemorates him.
